IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay: Criteria, Tips, and Strategies to Score Higher

IELTS Writing Task 2 is often the most important and challenging part of the Writing module because it carries double weight compared to Task 1. Candidates are required to write a minimum of 250 words in response to an essay question, presenting clear ideas, relevant arguments, and a logical structure. A strong performance in Task 2 can significantly improve the overall Writing band score.

The essay is assessed using four equally weighted criteria. The first is Task Response, which measures how well the candidate addresses the question. To score higher, candidates must answer all parts of the question, present a clear position, and support ideas with relevant explanations or examples. Candidates should avoid repetition and memorised phrases. Spelling errors and incorrect word forms can negatively impact the score, so accuracy is essential.

The final criterion is Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Examiners expect a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with reasonable control. While minor grammatical errors are acceptable, frequent mistakes that obscure meaning will limit the band score. Accuracy should always take priority over attempting overly complex grammar.

In terms of strategy, planning before writing is critical. Spending 3–5 minutes analysing the question and outlining ideas helps maintain focus and relevance. Candidates should clearly identify the essay type, such as opinion, discussion, problem-solution, or advantages-disadvantages, and follow an appropriate structure.

Time management is another key factor. Ideally, around 40 minutes should be allocated to Task 2, including planning, writing, and quick proofreading. Leaving time to check grammar, spelling, and sentence clarity can improve the final score.

Regular practice with feedback is essential for improvement. Writing essays without evaluation often reinforces errors. Analysing band descriptors and reviewing model answers also helps candidates understand examiner expectations.
